Cycas

Cycas or Queen sago palm is one of the very unusual and popular ornamentals. The popular sago palm (Cycas revolute) is grown as a houseplant and outdoor ornamental, and its leaves are widely used as ceremonial “palms” in floriculture. Queen sago is a medium sized suckering cycad, growing up to 5 meters tall. A rather palm-like appearance, it produces one or more, usually unbranched stems topped with a crown of large, bright green, glossy leaves 150 – 250cm long. The dark green pinnate leaves, with narrow foot long leaflets that curve gracefully downward.

Plant care tips:

  • Sunlight: You can grow cycas in bright and indirect bright light also Full sunlight
  • Watering: The soil is best kept moist, so water once the soil begins to dry slightly at the top. Over-watering or watering at the crown of the plant can cause the plant to rot. During the winter reduce watering.
  • Soil: A well-draining and aerated potting mix is needed. Something like 1 part peat, 1 part pine bark and 1 part coarse sand is a suitable mix.
  • Maintenance: low maintenance.
  • Special feature: attractive leaves.
  • Repotting: Once again because it’s a slow growing plant it does not need to be re-potted every year. Once every 3 years should be fine.
  • Propagation: Palms cannot be propagated using the techniques commonly used for other plants in the garden. Taking a cutting will therefore not result in a new palm tree. Palms can only be grown from seed.

Plant protection & care:

  1. Sago palms appreciate a warm and bright environment, though harsh sunlight can damage the foliage. They also like humidity, supplemented by misting them regularly with clean water from a spray bottle.
  2. The bottom-most, lower ring of leaves are the oldest. Do not remove the leaves until they turn brown and die.
  3. Root rot is a fungal infection often caused by too much water or using poorly draining, compacted soil. The fungus gets to the roots and destroys the plant from within.
