Ficus Starlight

A delightful variety of the ever popular evergreen, weeping Fig bearing cascading branches of shiny green and white pointed, oval, variegated leaves. Produces aerial and invasive underground roots if planted in the ground. It is an excellent plant for garden rockery settings, desert type landscapes, patios and botanical gardens. Ficus plants range from large trees to woody shrubs to trailing vines. The ficus comes in many shapes and sizes that make this a popular focal point in your home.

Plant care tips:

  • Sunlight: At least 3-6 hours of preferably morning sunlight a day is ideal for plant to grow well and natural indirect bright light for the rest of the day.
  • Watering: Before water poke your finger/plain small stick into the soil to check the moisture. Water when top soil (1-2 inches) feels dry to touch. Water thoroughly in the summer and reduce watering in winter and rainy season.
  • Soil: The soil should be well drained and fertile, rich in organic content for growing plant. Grow well in pH range of 5.5 to 7
  • Maintenance: low maintenance
  • Special feature: ficus trees can maintain their tree-like shape regardless of their size, so this makes them ideal for bonsai or for massive houseplants in large spaces. The Bodhi tree, under which the Buddha achieved enlightenment, is believed by many to have been a Ficus religiosa
  • Repotting: When a plant outgrows in current pot, re-pot with fresh potting soil and some fertilizer
  • Propagation: ficus panda propagation is best done by growing stem cuttings in soil or water, but they can also be propagated by air layering. Water and soil propagation have a higher success rate than air layering. It’s essential to watch the cuttings closely as they develop, particularly during the early stages of their growth.

 Plant problems & protection:

  • Cold drafts from windows or doors will harm them, so make sure to place them somewhere where drafts will not be an issue.
  • The ficus tree does not tolerate waterlogging. This leads to root rot and can result in severe leaf loss, as water and nutrients can no longer be transported to the leaves in sufficient quantities. In this case, repot your Ficus panda in fresh, permeable soil and be sure to create a drainage layer. After watering, the water must be removed from the planter.
  • Ficus panda needs slightly higher humidity, which can be achieved with occasional spraying, for example. Dry and hot air can cause it to shed its leaves and also encourage pest infestations
  • Ficus tree does not feel comfortable in a draught. If there is no other cause for the leaf drop, you should check the site conditions and find a new place for the panda ficus.
