Rex Begonia or Begonia Red

Rex Begonia or Begonia Red offers colourful foliage and is one of the most interesting indoor plants around. Despite its exotic looks, Rex Begonia is actually easy to grow. Because it’s a relatively short houseplant, Rex Begonia is perfect for desks and table tops where wildly colourful, variegated foliage makes is it a perfect contrast against other houseplants.
Grow Rex Begonia in a medium to bright spot as a houseplant. In Southern regions, it may benefit from protection from direct sun during the heat of the day, but in Northern regions, some sun on the leaves presents no problem.

Plant care tips:

Sunlight: Rex Begonias like bright, indirect light year-round, they can tolerate less light than other begonias and will thrive under fluorescent lights.
Watering: Rex Begonias require regular water, but be careful not to overwater them.
Soil: Airy, light, fast-draining soil is best for Rex Begonias. Let the soil surface become dry to the touch before watering. But don’t let the soil become overly dry or the plant will begin to wither. The soil should be watered to feel slightly, but evenly moist.
Maintenance: low maintenance
Special features: beautiful and glossy leaves
Repotting: Use a soilless planting medium that is equal parts peat moss, vermiculite, and perlite. Mix together well and moisten with water. Gently remove the begonia from its container and immediately transplant it into the new medium. Water the begonia transplant and acclimate it in an area out of direct sun.
Propagation: Simply cut a rhizome into pieces about 1” to 1 ½” long, and press them gently into moistened potting soil, or a moistened mix of perlite and vermiculite. As with the leaf cuttings, give them high humidity and keep them in a warm, well-lit spot out of direct sunlight until roots begin to form.

Plant protection & care:

The presence of gnats in the soil is a sign that you’re overwatering. The best way to get rid of them is to allow the top inch of soil to dry between watering. You can also use a yellow sticky trap to help control them.
Bugs on the leaves are pretty rare. But if they do appear, it’s best to treat them by hand rather than spraying anything on your begonias. Dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol, and use it to kill and remove the bugs.
Most of the time, brown leaves means they aren’t getting the right amount of water (usually under watering). But can also be caused by lack of humidity or extreme temperatures (freezing or sunburn)
