Safari Ficus

These tropical plants generally have thick stems and fleshy, variegated leaves. Gardeners value this small, compact plant for its thick, variegated foliage, and ease of care. It has broad elongated leaves. The leaf has irregular yellowish-white edges, with shades of green sections in the centre. Safari Ficus is wonderful and incredibly rewarding plants with attractive foliage. It is common plant for the home and office landscape plant because of its less maintenance and exotic appearance. Imagine a mini tree plant with complete tree trunk and canopy. It is known to beautify many homes and offices with its unique features.

Plant care tips:

  • Sunlight:  Ficus Panda trees enjoy bright indirect or filtered light with variegated varieties happily able to take medium light. Bright, direct light may result in scalding of the leaves and leaf loss.
  • Watering: When watering, always check the top of the soil first. If the top of the soil is wet, do not water as this means they have enough moisture. If the top of the soil feels dry to the touch, this indicates that they need water.
  • Soil: Rich, humus and well-drained soil
  • Maintenance: low maintenance
  • Special feature: ficus trees can maintain their tree-like shape regardless of their size, so this makes them ideal for bonsai or for massive houseplants in large spaces. The plant is used for ornamental purpose
  • Repotting: When a plant outgrows in current pot, re-pot with fresh potting soil and some fertilizer
  • Propagation: Best done by growing stem cuttings in soil or water, but they can also be propagated by air layering. Water and soil propagation have a higher success rate than air layering. It’s essential to watch the cuttings closely as they develop, particularly during the early stages of their growth.

Plant problems & protection:

  • Remove dead, infected or damaged plant parts and discard them away from the plants. For any insect attack or disease, you can use Neem oil, Karanja oil spray for primary treatment.
  • In extremely bright apartments (i.e. floor to ceiling windows) safari ficus may get sunburned, and in this instance the safest bet is putting them in front of a sunny window with a sheer curtain. Do not block the light with a partial shade like a solar shade as they will block out the full spectrum of the sun’s radiation.
